I’ve been writing for SWANK for about two weeks now. Regardless of it being an ill site, you get to see the business side of me. Lookie.
The first time I heard these guys, I didn’t like them. I don’t know what I was smoking. Hopefully, you’re not smoking the same thing. Its too early to declare White Lies my favorite band; I’ve only two songs by them: this one and their first single, Unfinished Business. But boy oh boy are they sick. “Death,” the song, with its ghostly lyrics and tune alone, is incredible, and added with the cinematographic vision of the video (the faceless parents, the clock going back, the glowing garage…I could go on forever). Wow, just wow. Enough of the blabber. Watch it.

Taimak as Leroy Green. Vanity as Laura Charles. Julius Carry as Sho’nuff. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you….
The Last Dragon.
This movie, released in 1985, came out before my time, but that doesn’t stop it from possessing all my favorite movie qualities: kung-fu fight scenes, timeless comedy, and a dope ass soundtrack. Not to mention “the sweet lips of lady Laura,” better known as singer Vanity. It was also the first time I had ever seen a black man (or whatever Taimak is) doing martial arts in a movie….and not one, but two! (not to discredit Jim Kelly or any others, I saw them later on) To give a rundown, its about a young martial artist seeking the final level in his training, or “the glow.” While constantly dodging a sadistic, self-proclaimed “shogun of Harlem,” he just so happens to save a gorgeous VJ superstar that he’s been crushing on from some crooks in the music industry , and it gets crazier from there. It’s a shame that I can probably quote the whole movie, but here’s a few memorable ones:
“Who’s the master?!”
“Can you teach me some moves?”
“I am sick of hearing these bullshit Superman stories about the wazah! legendary Bruce Leroy, catching bullets with his teeth. Catches bullets with his teeth? Nigga, please!”
If you haven’t seen it or even heard of it, do yourself a huge favor and watch it. Classic.

Although my musical appetite flops around more than a fish fresh out of water, I’ve been bumpin’ these guys pretty hard recently. Indie band Minus the Bear, to be exact. I remember my brother introducing me to them via their Myspace page a while back, and I’ve been hooked since. If you are wondering about their name, the band says it originated from an inside joke. It’s kinda tough to describe their sound: electrifying electronics, haunting melodies, slightly off lyrics, and weird time signatures. With song titles like “Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!” and “Thanks For The Killer Game of Crisco Twister,” weird is a definite understatement. Listen:
Minus the Bear – Spritz!!! Spritz!!!
Minus the Bear – Let’s Play Guitar in a Five Guitar Band
The last track is from their latest album, “Planet of Ice.” Look into it. Become a fan.

Sorry, gang. I’ve been away, deeply enthralled in literature, the Latin dictionary, Guitar Hero, HEALTH and such. No fear; I’m boomeranging back. Certainly not empty handed.
Yes, the final edition of NY eye candy is here:
Fin.

It goes on. More shots.
One to go. Please note the ratio of people in the picture to the time of day taken. Play on, players.

July 4th was family time. July 5th was jungle time. Seriously, we went places. You might see: SOHO, Uniqlo, Yellow Rat Bastard, The Bread Factory, Pier 17, Kid Robot Flagship, and Times Square. It’s amazing how you can live somewhere and never truly see it. Well, maybe its not that amazing, cause millions of us seem to do it. Yeah, I’m talking to the New Yorkers. I didn’t know squat about where we were going, but my graceful tour guide and friends led the way. The rain didn’t stop our shine. Neither did broken umbrellas. Peep:
More where those came from.

Massachusetts is majestic. The second weekend into our stay, we headed over past Plymouth, to the cottage in Cape Cod. Lovely weather, lovely people. In between sand races, trips to Rose and Vicki’s, scary movie productions, failed frisbee-throwing, snack binges, bonfire improv games, and catching crabs (no pun intended), I managed to snag these.
New York is up next.
